1. Israel
   Most Arabs fled the region when the state of Israel was declared, but those who remain now make up almost one-fifth of the population of Israel. They are about two-thirds Muslim, as well as Christian and Druze. Palestinians living on the West Bank and the Gaza Strip fomented the riots begun in 1987, known as the intifada. Violence heightened as Israeli police cracked down and Palestinians retaliated. Continuing Jewish settlement of lands designated for Palestinians has added to the unrest.
2. Israel -- Programs
   "Three years in Israeli biotech terms is a generation," says Margaret Parton, program manager of the UK-US Bioscience Collaboration Program, back in Israel after a three-year lull. Parton has long established roots in the Israeli biotech community and has worked hand-in-hand with companies like Clal Biotech to help develop joint Israel and UK projects.
3. 1967 -- Israel
   In May 1967, Egypt and Syria took a number of steps which led Israel to believe that an Arab attack was imminent. On May 16, Nasser ordered a withdrawal of the United Nations Emergency Forces (UNEF) stationed on the Egyptian-Israeli border... removing the international buffer between Egypt and Israel which had existed since 1957. On May 22, Egypt announced a blockade of all goods bound to and from Israel through the Straits of Tiran. Israel had held since 1957 that another Egyptian blockade of the Tiran Straits would justify Israeli military action to maintain free access to the port of Eilat. Syria increased border clashes with Israel along the Golan Heights and mobilized its troops.
4. Ariel -- Israel
   To help shape this future direction, Ariel University Center of Samaria is being led by its International Board of Governors (IBG), chaired by Moshe Arens, Israel's former Defense Minister. Comprised of committed friends and supporters from Israel and abroad, the IBG will make every effort to raise the necessary funds to ensure the school's long-term expansion and to achieve the goal of becoming Israel's next university.
5. Israel -- Israelis
   "Direct foreign investment in Israel totaled $2.1 billion in January-April 2005, and is expected to reach $6 billion by the end of the year, Investment Promotion Center director Rachel Roei reported today. Foreign investment totaled $6.1 billion in 2004, including $1.8 billion in direct investment. Investors are interested mainly in high-tech, communications, and information technology; life sciences; and homeland security. Following the rise in direct investment by foreign companies, the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Labor is formulating a plan for aid in expanding development centers and other tools for marketing Israel as a preferred investment target. The plan offers foreign investors aid for R&D centers, based on the new Law for the Encouragement of Capital Investment, and the reform in the Encouragement of Industrial Research and Development Law (5744-1984). The amendment allows know-how developed with aid from the Office of the Chief Scientist to be exported in exchange for enlarge royalties.
6. Israel -- World
   Israel has a diversified, technologically advanced economy with substantial but decreasing government ownership and a strong high-tech sector. The major industrial sectors include high-technology electronic and biomedical equipment, metal products, processed foods, chemicals, and transport equipment. Israel possesses a substantial service sector and is one of the world's centers for diamond cutting and polishing. It ... is a world leader in software development and, prior to the violence that began in September 2000, was a major tourist destination.
7. Israel -- Wars
   Israel's first monarch resembled in many respects the judges who had preceded him, for the simple reason that, under his rule, the Hebrew tribes did not really coalesce into a nation. He was indeed the King of All Israel; his royal title and authority were to be hereditary, and at his summons all the tribes rallied around him. With their common help, he rescued the men of Jabes Galaad from impending destruction at the hands of the Ammonites, fought for a time successfully against the Philistines, and overcame the Amalecites. All the while... his kingship was little more than a judgeship. His court and ways of life were simple in the extreme; he had no standing army, no governors over subordinate districts; the war against the Philistines, the great enemies of Israel in his day, he waged like the judges of old, by hasty and temporary levies; and when he died at Gelboe, the profound and inveterate disunion of the tribes, which had been momentarily checked, immediately reappeared; most of them declared themselves in favour of his son, Isboseth, but Juda gathered around David and made him king in Hebron. In the civil war which ensued, "David grew always stronger and stronger", with the final result that his sovereignty was formally and voluntarily acknowledged by the elders of all the tribes.
8. Israel -- Countries
   A wave of Jewish immigration beginning in 1989, predominantly from the countries of the former U.S.S.R., brought nearly a million new citizens to Israel. These new immigrants, many of them highly educated, now constitute some 13% of Israel's 6.7 million inhabitants. Their successful absorption into Israeli society and its labor force forms a remarkable chapter in Israeli history. The skills brought by the new immigrants and their added demand as consumers gave the Israeli economy a strong upward push and in the 1990s, they played a key role in the ongoing development of Israel's high-tech sector.
9. The Holocaust -- Israel
   In Germany, France, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland and several other European countries, as well as in Israel, it is a crime to publicly dispute the official version of Holocaust history. Those who express dissident views about this chapter of history are routinely imprisoned, fined or forced into exile.
10. Gog -- Israel
    The vision then moves to God's destruction of Gog's (Satan's) antichrist, the beast/little horn...the Assyrian at Armageddon. The occupation, rule, and persecution of Israel for 42 months is just not in the scope of Ezekiel's vision. This is not an uncommon structure for prophetic visions.
