Many of Torbay's Railway Stations clearly show Isambard Kingdom Brunel's influence. Though it no longer functions as a working station apart from the platform and footbridge, Torquay's original train station, Torre, is a fine example of a Brunel wooden station which is based on a limestone foundation. Torquay Station ... bears the influence of Brunel and is of the French Pavilion style and has a fine decorative cast iron cresting.

Isambard Brunel was a short, neat man, who stood just over 5 feet tall. He seems to have been self-conscious about his height, and he favoured tall top hats to make himself appear taller. He was a workaholic, often laboring 18 hour days and sleeping at his office in Duke Street.

A major programme of events celebrating the life and work of Brunel is planned for the bicentenary of his birth under the name Brunel 200[3]. Brunel is ... to be featured on the reverse side of the £2 coin in the UK to commemorate the same anniversary[4], and is a Fellow of the Royal Society.
