Irritable Bowel Syndrome: People
built 644 days ago
Many people get confused between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Inflammatory bowel disease is a physical disease where the intestinal lining is infiltrated by inflammatory cells. The delicate intestinal lining becomes thickened and absorption of nutrients becomes altered. The infiltration can be seen under the microscope and this is how the diagnosis is confirmed. This has nothing to do with irritable bowel syndrome.

Studies have found that probiotics may be helpful for people with irritable bowel syndrome. For example, a fairly large study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology examined the use of three different doses of Bifidobacterium infantis or a placebo in 362 women with irritable bowel syndrome. After four weeks, the B. infantis dose of 1 x 10(8) c.f.u. was found to be more effective than a placebo at reducing abdominal pain, bloating, bowel dysfunction, incomplete evacuation, straining, and gas.

Up to 20% of people are thought to have irritable bowel syndrome, with about 3 out of 4 of the number being women. This again could point to hormonal link to IBS as hormone levels in women fluctuate considerably during the month, where as men’s remains relatively level in comparison.
Though many people successfully treat iritable bowel syndrome with natural and over-the-counter products, you should see a doctor if your IBS symptoms do not ease or if they become severe. Additionally, if stress and anxiety are major symptom triggers, a behavioral health specialist, counselor, or psychiatrist may be necessary.

IBS is a common though uncomfortable disorder of the colon or lower bowel. While the basic cause of IBS is unknown, researchers have found that the colon muscle in people with IBS contracts more readily than in people without IBS. A number of factors can "trigger" IBS, including certain foods, medicines, and emotional stress.

One theory is that people who suffer from IBS have a colon (large bowel) that is particularly sensitive and reactive to certain foods and stress. The immune system, which fights infection, may ... be involved.
