Iroquois Indians: People
built 627 days ago
Like most Indians of the East, the Iroquois depended upon corn as their main source of food. They usually ate one meal a day about mid-morning. Food was always on the fire and people ate when they got hungry. They were skilled hunters. On foot they stalked deer, moose and caribou. They only killed what they needed to survive.
A NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN FACTOID: The Iroquois Confederacy, made up of six Nations, was formed in about 1575. The Iroquois Nation includes the Onondaga, the Oneida, the Senecca, the Mohawk, the Cayuga, and the Tuscarora. The Iroquois are from New York State. Near their pallisaded villages which were often surrounded by moats, the Iroquois planted maize, squash, and beans--the Three Sisters. They hunted deer and bear, caught fish, tapped the sugar maples, and gathered a variety of plant foods. They lived in large bark longhouses, each house holding as many as sixty people and headed by a clan mother.
The Iroquois is a confederation of American Indians, who formed an alliance after years of infighting. When the Europeans arrived in America, the confederacy consisted the people inhabiting what is now upstate New York, parts of Pennsylvania, Ontario, and Quebec.

Believing that diseases were caused by evil spirits, the Indians used charms and magic to remove the evil influence. The magical procedures were usually performed by those supposed to have the power to control spirit forces. Indians might call them such names as “mystery man,” “singer,” or “the wonderful.” White people called them medicine men.

The Scots-lrish immigrant girl Mary Jemison was captured following the murder of her family by Shawnee Indians and Frenchmen in western Pennsylvania. Subsequently adopted by two Seneca women who had lost a brother in the French and Indian War, Jemison was given the name 'Two Falling Voices.' The adopted girl enjoyed full rights as a Seneca, eventually marrying a Delaware Indian and raising eight children.... Living on the reservation, Jemison became a respected spokesperson and negotiator for her people, known as the 'white woman of the Genesee.' Her wisdom and strength are in evidence throughout this work. Jim Gould, Adirondac Splendid.... A valuable source on Seneca life. American Indian Quarterly
