Iroquois Indians: North America
built 627 days ago
The Iroquois Indians took the side of the English during both the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. There were massacres and retaliations. To secure his western front, George Washington planned an invasion in 1779 called the Sullivan Expedition. A force of 5000 men under Generals Sullivan and Clinton defeated the Iroquois Indians in a battle near Newton (Elmira). A detachment of soldiers under Colonel Zebulon Taylor and Lt. Colonel Dearborn then marched north toward the Cayuga Indian villages on the side of Cayuga Lake.
Blackfoot Indians of North America lived in many parts of Montana and neighboring Canadian provinces. They believed that magic powers were in stones, bones, pipes and other objects. Blackfoot Indians hunted buffalo on foot until about 1730, when horses were introduced.
Migration West As the 17th century wore on, the lands of the lower River Indians were hunted out. To the north, the beaver territory was taken over by the Iroquois Indians, and from the south they were pressed by Dutch expansion. Unable to survive here, some worked their way south toward the back country of Virginia and the Carolinas, but most went west beyond the Appalachian Mountains to the remote Far Country of the Ohio Valley and the Great Lakes.
