Bilingual sign in English and Irish in Tesco store, Ballyfermot, Dublin. In an effort to increase the use of the Irish language by the State, the Official Languages Act was passed in 2003. This act ensures that most publications made by a governmental body must be published in both official languages, Irish and English. In addition, the office of Language Commissioner has been set up to act as an ombudsman with regard to equal treatment for both languages. Effectively this is to protect Irish as a minority language.
The Irish language television service should be different from existing models which are currently operating. TnG or Channel Four derive programmes by receiving ideas from the numerous independent companies. They then commission those ideas which they think are appropriate. These are limited by the amount of money they can afford to spend on programming. The BBC make most of their programmes in house with some going to independents.
By learning Irish in such a natural way, children are honing and extending skills that can be applied to other languages. French classes give a basic understanding of the language before entering second-level education.

Irish speakers will now be able to work more easily in their chosen language following the unveiling today of an Irish edition of the Microsoft search portal. MSN Search allows users search the Internet in Irish and follows the Microsoft move to make Windows XP and Office 2003 available in Irish this summer.
