Japanese Irises have been developed over many years from forms of Iris ensata. This is a hardy waterside plant, native to wide areas of eastern Asia. It has been the subject of many years of selective breeding. The distinctive flowers, offset by the sword-shaped foliage can provide a distinctive component to waterside plantings. Imagine a walk beside a slow-flowing stream, a pond or a small lake.

Iris lacustris. Iris tenuis is a very light pale blue spring wildflower occasionally white. The signal is composed of a series of pale yellow ridges on the spreading sepals. The petals are ascending. The inflorescence has two to three branches with each branch possessing a single flower. The 15 mm wide, stiff dark green leaves arise from shallowly rooted creeping rhizomes, 30cm between offshoots forming loose colonies.

Yard & Garden Brief Iris borers spend the winter as eggs on old iris leaves and plant debris at the base of iris stalks. In early spring, they hatch into tiny caterpillars and climb up new foliage. They chew pinprick-sized holes and tunnel inside leaves as they continue down toward the rhizome. Their feeding causes streaks that appear tan or water-soaked. Later, the tips of infested iris turn brown and appear to senesce (age prematurely), although the entire plant seldom dies.
Adult - Iris borer moths are mottled brown with yellow brown hind wings. Most of the time, the iris borer is represented only by its injury that is discovered when people dig the rhizomes to transplant them in late summer. The borer is a caterpillar in the same family as the corn earworm and cabbage looper.

The IRIS System was born as a honored thesis in the Technological University of Pereira back in 2004. Then DUTO was created as a company to develop this system, and with the financial support of the local government there have been developed and highly tested more than five different versions of the system. For his unique characteristics this project have been awarded nationally and internationally for organizations like Ventures, MTV, IDB, OAS, YABT, GlobalTiC, BidNetwork, and Global Knowledge Partership, in countries like Colombia, Panamá, Taiwan, Netherlands and Malaysia. In this moment is in developed a pilot test with 10 systems financed by the local government, and there' plans for national expansion in the second part of 2008, and global expansion in the 2009 with development of a global collaboration platform for the teachers to exchange the pedagogical images used in each culture.
A well-timed insecticide application can help reduce an iris borer infestation. Two options are acephate (Orthene) or spinosad (Bulls-Eye). It is important to time the application when eggs are just hatching. This is approximately when new growth is about four to six inches high. A repeat treatment 10-14 days after the first application may be necessary. Dimethoate (often sold as Cygon 2E) was a commonly used product for iris borer management... it was canceled in 2002 and is no longer available.
