Before joining Telcordia Technologies, Roddy built a distinguished career with Nortel Networks, serving as vice president and general manager of professional services. He also served as vice president of technology and director, Ottawa Laboratories, for public carrier networks. In that role, he was responsible for the core hardware and software development of the switching product line.

At one stage there was a threat that the Iridium satellites would have to be de-orbited;[2] ... they remained on orbit and operational. Their service was restarted in 2001 by the newly founded Iridium Satellite LLC, which was owned by a group of private investors. Although the satellites and other assets and technology behind Iridium were estimated to have cost on the order of US$6 billion, the investors bought the firm for about US$25 million.[3]

Iridium opened a new satellite ground station in Fairbanks, Alaska with three Iridium earth terminals. The company has plans to add five more earth terminals before year-end 2007. Iridium officially opened this new telemetry, tracking and command/control (TTAC) station for additional layers of network visibility, redundancy, flexibility and reliability. It adds command and control capabilities, and provides remote access to satellites from Iridium's existing gateways. This new ground station is facilitating Iridium's goal of having the highest level of redundancy and flexibility in providing voice and data services to Alaska and to the rest of the world.

Iridium voice and circuit switched data traffic originating in South America has grown by 25 percent over the last year. In the last three months alone, traffic in South America has increased by more than 33 percent over the same period last year. In addition to many customers switching to using Iridium satellite phones, Iridium is seeing its partners, such as Stratos and Tesacom, launching new and innovative data applications to exploit the power and global reach of the Iridium network.
