Iridium: Iridium System
built 664 days ago
In addition to being the only mobile satellite services provider offering THIS TYPE OF guarantee, Iridium runs the only network offering ubiquitous pole-to-pole coverage with no services gaps anywhere on the planet. The company's unique constellation of cross-linked low-earth orbiting (LEO) satellites provides multiple layers of built-in redundancy to ensure network reliability. Calls are handed-off from one satellite to another until they are downloaded to one of Iridium's terrestrial gateways and patched into the public-switched telephone system. Iridium's 66 operational satellites are supplemented by numerous in-orbit spares that can be activated as needed, and backup gateway facilities are available if necessary.

While laying the foundation for the future, Iridium continues to introduce important enhancements to its current constellation with initiatives to offer higher-speed services, as well as new opportunities for data services and embedded systems. In addition to network equipment sustainment and system upgrades, Iridium has been investing in new infrastructure to add features and to build in redundancy, including new ground stations in Fairbanks, Alaska and Svalbard, Norway.

[D]uring the quarter, Iridium announced a donation of more than $500,000 worth of satellite phones and air time to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The donation went directly to relief workers in the areas hardest hit by the tsunami in Asia. Iridium is working with government organizations around the world to develop a global tsunami warning system based on global satellite communications capabilities.

Iridium Satellite LLC delivers essential communications services to remote locations, where often no other form of communications is available. Iridium uses a dedicated constellation of 66 operational satellites and 14 spares in low-earth orbit (LEO), which provides global coverage without restrictions to users or applications. Iridium Satellite LLC boasts complete coverage of the earth - including oceans, airways and Polar Regions, making it the only provider of truly global satellite voice and data solutions. Iridium systems are primarily focused on remote phone and digital data service. This system is readily available to private industry and is best applied to situations where large amounts of data need to be transmitted, as airtime is charged by the minute.

"Reaching customers through Iridium and Tesacom delivers Stratos a very important advantage in the South American market," said Ronald Spithout, senior vice president, marketing and sales, Stratos. "The Iridium system, with its ubiquitous global coverage, fills a service gap -- particularly in the southern regions of the continent closer to the south pole -- where other satellite service providers might have poor or limited connectivity. Tesacom is the regional industry expert for helping customers access these valuable services."
