Irene is a 25-year veteran of the food and beverage industry and has a long history of bringing a consumer focus and innovation to building businesses. She began her career at Dancer Fitzgerald Sample advertising agency in New York and later joined General Foods in consumer research. Over the years, she advanced in a variety of leadership roles at Kraft. Among her many accomplishments, she led the restructuring and turnaround of key businesses in the United States, Canada and Mexico, and the highly successful integration of the Nabisco acquisition. Irene ... served on the senior team that led Kraft’s Initial Public Offering in 2001.

Irene was an autocrat in the laboratory, exerting the authority of her position to make sure that work done at the Institute was meticulous. Politically, she was a socialist and she demonstrated her belief in social equality on several occasions. Because of continuing frailty due to a continuing battle with tuberculosis, Irene spent most of the World War II years in a convalescent home in Switzerland. Because of concern for her for the safety of her husband and children, she did occasionally return to Paris. In 1943, she was stopped at the Swiss border when she attempted to enter the country at Porrentruy. She spent several days, with hundreds of other refugees fleeing the Nazis, sleeping on a straw mat in a communal room in a detention center.

From the outset Irene appears to have had political ambitions and was certainly concerned to emphasise her status as regent, and more than regent. On her first coins she not Constantine VI holds the orb, and she is referred to as Constantine's co-ruler, while Constantine's name is placed on the reverse, the less important side of the coin.[[13]] Her selection in 781 of a bride for her son was ... significant -- Rotrud (called in Greek Erythro) a daughter of Charlemagne.([14]] Rotrud's suitability for the position was ensured by the dispatch of a eunuch Elissaios to teach her 'Greek letters and language and educate her in the customs of the Roman empire'.[[15]] That Irene's position was not entirely secure is shown by another plot early in 781, when Elpidius, strategos of Sicily, joined the Caesars' faction: when the Sicilians would not return him to Constantinople, Irene had his wife and sons scourged, tonsured and imprisoned.[[16]] A fleet under the patrician Theodore succeeded in defeating the Sicilians and Elpidius fled to Africa where he defected to the Arabs.[[17]] Perhaps as a result of this defection, in 781 Irene appointed one of her eunuchs, the sakellarius John, to exercise supervision over all the Asiatic themata (the post of sakellarius, a high-ranking official, may have included fiscal responsibilities at this point). Another eunuch, Stauracius, was made logothete of the dromos, the most important ministerial position. It was customary for empresses to rely on eunuch ministers, but Irene's dependence on eunuchs in all aspects of government demonstrates her distrust of aristocrats in positions of eminence (perhaps because of their iconoclast tendencies), while the mingled incompetence and veniality of her appointees highlight her own inability to select competent and trustworthy staff: Stauracius in particular was to prove a bane to the empire.

Irene grew into a full scale band quite spontaneously in 2005. The members were all friends from various bands hanging out in a local pub in Göteborg, Sweden. Some songs that Tobias Isaksson (aka Bobby) had written just couldn't wait to be performed live. The people that did the first show wanted to stick around and by the autumn of 2005 Irene was an octet with semi-permanent members. Shortly after that the record label Labrador signed the band.

By her marriage to Emperor Leo IV the Khazar, Irene had only one son Constantine VI, whom she succeeded on the throne. A female relative of Irene, Theophano was chosen in 807 by Empereor Nikephoros as the bride of his son Staurakios. An unnamed female relative was married to the Bulgar ruler Telerig in 776. Irene ... had a nephew. [8]

Irene was awarded her Nobel prize in a time of astonishing developments in atomic physics. In the preceding few years, Chadwick had identified the neutron, completing the elucidation of the triumverate of particles which compose all atoms, and which replaced the Daltonian theory of solid spherical atoms. The task of modern chemists and atomic physicists was to restore a sense of order to the atom, which at this time seemed quite vaporous and busy, having been shown, approximately three decades earlier, to contain tiny negative electrons and, several years later, relatively massive positive nuclei, all somehow avoiding each other despite their attractive natures. These particles seemed to exist in an atom which was a virtual void since, as demonstrated by Ernst Rutherford, together these particles seemed to occupy very little space. In addition, certain elements, such as radium, were seen to undergo extremely energetic emissions of particles or rays, in the process transforming themselves into other elements. Cockcroft and Walton had, weeks after the identification of the neutron, managed to realize the alchemists dream of deliberate transmutation of one element to another - a startling development, but only one of many to follow shortly within a decade.
