The U.S. delegation last February, which ... included the National Council of Churches and Sojourners/Call to Renewal, was the first U.S. delegation to meet with an Iranian president in Iran since the fall of the Shah in the late 1970s. The delegation returned to the United States with a proposal that the U.S. and Iranian governments immediately engage in direct, face-to-face talks and promote more people-to-people exchanges among religious leaders, legislators and civil society.

A decade later, Allen Dulles solemnly stated that communism had "achieved control of the governmental apparatus" in Iran. And a decade after that, Fortune magazine, to cite one of many examples, kept the story alive by writing that Mossadegh "plotted with the Communist party of Iran, the Tudeh, to overthrow Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlevl and "hook up with the Soviet Union."
