Ipswich Town badge.gif One of Ipswich Town's nicknames is The Blues, stemming from their traditional kit, which is predominantly blue. Since turning professional, Ipswich have used a number of alternate (or away) colours, including white, orange, red and black vertical stripes, claret and green, cream and black vertical stripes and dark blue and claret.[48]
Formed on 16 October, 1878, Ipswich Town remained staunchly amateur for the first 58 years of their existence. Most of their players in those early days were drawn from Ipswich Public School. In 1880 the club merged with Ipswich RUFC and took up residence at Portman Road, which had been the rugby club's ground. The club's first president was Thomas Clement Cobbold, the Tory MP for Ipswich and a member of the famous brewing family. Although Thomas died in 1883, the family has remained associated with the club right up to the present.
Two coaches of Ipswich Town have gone on to become the manager of England football. The first was Sir Alf Ramsey. He ... won the World Cup for England. The second was Sir Bobby Robson who got England to the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup finals.
Industry around Ipswich has had a strong agricultural bias with Ransomes, Sims & Jefferies Ltd, one of the most famous agricultural manufacturers, located in the town. It is notable that the worlds first commercial motorised lawnmower was built by Ransomes in 1902. There was a sugar beet factory at Ipswich for many years; it was closed in 2001 as part of a rationalisation by British Sugar.
