The iPod brand has become synonymous with excellent portable audio players, and the 4GB Apple iPod Mini carries on the tradition with its fashionable, intelligent design. Its hard drive holds about 74 hours' worth of music and shares the same impressive graphical interface and sound specs as its larger sibling, the white iPod. Meanwhile, the earlier device's strongest design point--the scrollwheel--has been improved to help you navigate menus and music with even greater one-handed ease. The only remaining question is whether this new breed of device can create a sweet spot between flash- and hard drive-based players. At $250, the iPod Mini (in multiple colors) is more expensive than some hard drive-based players with larger capacities, but bragging rights alone could make it worth the price.

The iPod Mini is arguably a better value than the high-end flash-based MP3 players. Sure, you can get better battery life with a flash-based player and you do not have to worry about moving parts. However, if your budget is keeping you from snapping up a larger player, or you do not have much of a digital music library to speak of, then a smaller-capacity hard drive player like the MuVo2 or iPod Mini is a better deal than a flash player. With smaller and smaller hard drives becoming available, the price/performance ratio is only going to get better.

Priced at £179, the iPod Mini is certainly a desirable product. For existing iPod owners... it's probably not worth changing over and those looking for a pocket music player may want to seek out other options from iRiver, Rio and Creative before making a decision.
