[N]ow, Apple's added a second iPod to its lineup: the iPod mini. Given the amazing popularity of the original model, what could Apple possibly want to change? Let's take a closer look at the new iPod mini and find out.

The 6GB model is a timely upgrade for the iPod mini, with 50 percent more storage, over twice the battery life, and improved audio quality. The vibrant new colors are fun, too.

The expected color-screened minis didn't happen, although the 30GB iPod photo is probably going to be a nice seller. It's the first photo model that hasn't seemed ridiculously priced and replaces the 40GB monochrome model, which is now only available in 20GB. The new minis ... have a greatly improved battery life, up to 18hours, from just 8.

The iPod mini uses Microdrive hard drives (CompactFlash II) made by Hitachi and Seagate. First generation models were available in a 4 GB size, while second generation models were available in both 4 GB and 6 GB versions (capable of storing roughly 1,000 and 1,500 songs, respectively) and eventually had the drive size laser etched on the case to help distinguish between the two.
