Ipod Mini: Computers
built 224 days ago
The Apple iPod Mini's playback features are all accessible and programmable from the main menu. You can browse by song, artist, album, genre, playlist, or composer. With the On The Go function, you can create a new playlist without a computer. When you sync the player to iTunes 4.2 or later, the new playlist uploads to your PC or Mac and can download back to the Mini automatically for later listening. Another new function: In Autosync mode, iTunes sizes up your iPod Mini's available storage space and creates a playlist that fits the capacity perfectly, consisting of songs you've rated highly or listened to more frequently (in iTunes). This is crucial since the 4GB capacity (which Apple says can hold 1,000 songs) is smaller than most serious digital music collections.

Look out iPod Mini… Sony has released what they call “the world’s smallest portable audio device” built with a 1.8-inch, 20GB hard drive. The silver NW-HD1 model weighs less than 4 ounces and can store up to 13,000 four-minute songs (that is if you record them at 48kbps… expect about 9000 at >128kbps). The internal rechargeable battery provides up to 30 hours of continuous playback and the unit ... offers G-Sensor shock protection, which is an advantage over traditional hard drive based MP3 players (like the iPod) by safeguarding the player’s internal mechanisms. The NW-HD1 connects to a compatible computer via a USB 2.0 interface and comes bundled with SonicStage version 2.1 software. Accessing music on the Network Walkman player is as easy with the use of Sony’s Jog Dial. The unit also features a seven-line backlit LCD display that makes selections easy to read in four different display modes… track numbers, bit rates, song titles, and artist names.

The iPod Mini comes with a USB cord which serves as the conduit between the Mini and your computer. You can download an entire album's worth of songs onto your Mini in seconds, and the Mini is able to "auto sync" with your iTunes selections on your computer. In other words, when you download or rearrange songs on your computer through iTunes software, and then plug your Mini in, it will download all of the most recent changes automatically.

Although you don’t define the iPod in terms of speed, “speed bump” could fairly describe the iPod mini (Second Generation), the latest version of Apple’s wildly popular mid-sized music player. Like speed-bumped computers, these iPods include no new features. However, these new minis—available in capacities of 4GB ($199) and 6GB ($249)—do offer vastly improved battery life and, in the case of the 6GB model, greater storage capacity for the same price as the original 4GB iPod mini. Additionally, the pink, green, and blue models sport more vivid hues than the original mini, thanks to a metal-flake coating on the case. (The silver model looks the same as the original. The gold color scheme found in the first generation of minis has been discontinued.)

The iPod mini sported an ultra-thin Compact Flash Microdrive hard drive made by Hitachi. First generation models were available in a 2 GB and 4 GB versions, while second generation models were available in 4 GB and 6 GB versions. The hard drive size was engraved on the case, in order to help the user in distinguishing between both the models. The iPod mini was equipped with a dock connector in order to connect the device to the computer via the USB or FireWire interface. The battery of the device was charged during the connection to the computer. In addition, iPod mini was equipped with a hold switch, a headphone jack, and a remote port for accessories.
