Click for larger view Ionizer is the most powerful software-based noise reduction system available in terms of the sheer sound quality which can be achieved. Ionizer allows you to clean up the most problematic tracks leaving the original music or sound intact. Ionizer is a completely user-configurable and real-time multiband dynamic processor which offers fast spectral analysis and 512 bands of gated EQ per channel. Ionizer can be utilized for equalization, limiting, compression and expansion, all at 32-bit floating point internal precision.

CONCLUSIONS At a bargain-basement price of $499 list, Ionizer is a necessity for anyone working with the MAS platform. Powerful and incredibly flexible, Ionizer is, in effect, an entire suite of plug-ins for the price of one. The EQ, compression and limiting functions are downright superb. Many users will ... put the noise reduction and frequency morphing setups to good use. Ionizer does what no other MAS plug-in can do and does it exceedingly well.

Unlike other software equalizers, Ionizer does not have a read-out for level settings - it has the Mood Bar instead. This color-coded bar changes hues to indicate the amount of gate and gain processing. The host program controls the input levels. Ionizer has output controls with its native host, HyperEngine. For other hosts, such as Premiere, Audio Suite or MAS, Ionizer relies on the interface and controls for the outputs they provide.
Ionizer splits the audio spectrum into 512 independent frequency bands, each with its own gain boost/cut. A Spectrum function analyzes the audio you select and maps its frequency response on an X-Y plot. Frequencies are plotted along the horizontal axis, amplitude along the vertical axis on the left side of the screen. Ionizer then automatically generates red and blue curves that help determine the threshold and ratio of processing. These curves initially parallel the audio's frequency profile for convenience's sake, following the ups and downs in response, but they can be exhaustively edited.

Like Ionizer's other functions, the EQ is incredibly flexible to use. Having 512 bands is only part of the story. It's far more flexible than a parametric equalizer because you can have different slopes on either side of each center frequency. This makes it possible, for example, to get a lot of cut at a center frequency while treating frequencies to only one side with kid gloves. If you can draw the curve, Ionizer will do it.

The second and less expensive type of ionizer is one that generates negative ions. These ionizers use a special electric process to release ions, or molecular fragments, into the surrounding air. The ions then attach to oxygen and other gases in the air to create a negative charge, something that particles in the air, such as dust, pollen, or smoke, find very attractive. These air particles swarm the negatively charged molecules until a heavier-than-air cluster is formed. Because this cluster is heavy, it either falls to the ground and can then be vacuumed or swept up, or else it is pulled into the ionizer through an intake vent. If the cluster is sucked into the ionizer, it is then captured via HEPA filters (specifically manufactured to capture tiny particles) or magnetic bars until the filter is changed or the bars are wiped clean.
