The Ionic Breeze air filter is something that most of use have seen in a tv infomercial, and wondered if it works. Invented by Sharper Image this professional air purifier is probably one the most popular air cleaners on the market. So what's all the hyped about? If you have any type of bacteria in your home or commercial office, then the Sharper Image Breeze air purifier can give you fresh air once again. It has been proven to remove a number of types of bacteria, pollen, dust, smoke, soot, mites, viruses and mold. Air Ionic purifiers such as the Breeze are designed to rid your home of those harmful airborne pollutants and household odors; making for a healthier, cleaner living environment.
Sharper image states that the maintenance of the Ionic Breeze is a breeze. According to their website and infomercial, you simply wipe the contaminant grid to clean the unit. Many customers have found that it takes more than a simple wipe to clean it, and that a real cleaning often involves intensive scrubbing to remove the contaminants. The fact that Sharper Image prominantly advertises replacement collection screens on its website would seem to suggest that this is the case. Cleaning of the collection plates must be done as frequently as each week or the unit will stop working effectively. how is this less maintenance?

Ionic Breeze for microchips Researchers have shrunk Sharper Image's bestselling Ionic Breeze fan down to the microscale. Well, kinda. Purdue University engineers developed a tiny "ionic wind engine" to help cool computer chips. As processing power increases in line with Moore's Law, they ... get much hotter. According to experiments, the ionic wind engine increased a chip's cooling rate by 250 percent. From a Purdue University press release: The experimental cooling device, which was fabricated on top of a mock computer chip, works by generating ions - or electrically charged atoms - using electrodes placed near one another.

One of the benefits of the Ionic Breeze over other products is that these air cleaners do not have any filters that need to be replaced. This is a feature that many products on the market have and the filters are generally not cheap. In addition, they are often hard to find and if you don’t replace them often enough, the unit simply doesn’t work for you. But, with the Ionic Breeze, the need for this is minimized. You simply need to remove the blades inside and wipe them down. That’s it!

Although the Ionic Breeze sounds technologically safe and like it should be just as effective as an air cleaner equipped with an electrostatic medium, this is not the case. The Ionic Breeze was tested by Consumer Ratings and received a “poor” rating due to its inefficient ways of absorbing particles from the air. These air cleaners were tested in a small office with all doors closed. This is the perfect environment for any air cleaner to be able to clean the air effectively. However, this test proved that the Ionic Breeze air cleaner was only able to remove 30% of the particles in the air. The 30% of particles that were removed were particles that were found in the air prior to it entering the air cleaner.

Both the Ionic Breeze and Ionic Pro positively charge particles in the air and collect the particles on negatively charged collector grids. The positive ions are created by 2 corona discharge wires. Because they lack fans to move air, these types of units have been severely criticized by independent consumer type organizations for quite some time. They will collect dust on the grids, but then again, so does your TV. The main benefit of these units is the ozone production. Ozone oxidizes second hand smoke, odors and airborne contaminants. Unfortunately, public misinformation on ozone by the general public is causing manufacturers to limit ozone production, hence the "Ozone Guard" now in use by the Ionic Breeze.
