The Ionic Breeze is an air purifier marketed by Sharper Image, a company well known for its popular series of infomercials featuring the product. Over the past several years, it has become regarded as one of the most recognized brand names of air purifiers on the market. The marketing of the Ionic Breeze focuses a slick demo showing its effectiveness at removing what appears to be smoke from the air in a small chamber on the set, its lack of filters (no filters to replace), the fact that it is completely silent during operation, and its relatively low power consumtion. While these are certainly desirable attributes in an air cleaner, the fact is that there may very well be far better and more cost effective technologies available.

This is due to the fact that it uses needlepoint ionization (negative ion-producing electrode pins), while the Ionic Breeze has only two ionizing wires. Needlepoints produce far higher negative ion levels than ionizing wires. As a result, the Surround Air ionizers can produce many more negative ions. The Ionic Breeze is supposed to trap the airborne particles in the air as they pass through stainless steel blades that carry an electric charge. The particles and chemicals in the contaminated air are to be infected with a charge when passing through them. This charge will then attract to the opposite charge of the blades, making the particles stick to the blades. The user then should wipe down the blades so that the particles do not build up on them. The contaminated air is drawn into the cleaner through the back vent and is blown out of the unit in the front. The systemdoes not posses a fan like most units to move the air through.

The Ionic Breeze is quiet indeed. This is because the unit has no fan to exchange and filter the DIRTY air in the room through the machine in order to remove it from your indoor environment. The Ionic Breeze can only remove a very small amount of particles onto its thin-narrow collector plate that is attached to the unit. This collector plate can only attract particles from a distance of approximately 1/8 of an inch away! If the collector plate is dirty, the plate is not able to keep collecting particles onto it. Then its function ceases all together!
