Ionia

Aside from Troy, Ionia was important to the Greek when the Dorians invaded the Mainland and Peloponnesos. The Dorians are often thought to be a group of Greeks from the north. They came down and invaded the southern part of Greece, taking over most of the Greek cities and land. One city that was not taken over was Athens, but most of the Athenian fled to the west coast of Turkey... known as Ionia. This is where the distinction between Ionic and Doric begins. The Ionian Greeks built new homes and temples in Ionia, the remains of which can be seen today.
Ionia, in ancient geography, was the name given to a portion of the western coast of Asia Minor, adjoining the Aegean Sea and bounded on the east by Lydia. It consisted of a narrow strip of land near the coast, which together with the adjacent islands was occupied by immigrant Greeks of the Ionic race, and ... distinguished from the interior district, inhabited by the Lydians.

The idea of an independent Ionia was being aired from various sides all through 1922. To a certain extent it reflected the impossibility of the Greek position at the time - the Greeks were beginning to realise they could not beat Kemal nor keep fighting him for ever, but on the other hand they would not agree to simply pack up and go home, leaving Ionia to Kemal. An independent Ionia, was, or seemed like, a way out of this dilemma.
