Iodine: Treatment
built 623 days ago
iodine Iodine's use in the treatment of wounds was first described in 1839. By the late 1800's, iodine tinctures came into wide use as microbicides. Iodine quickly kills a broad range of microorganisms. In laboratory test, iodine destroys many microorganisms and viruses within 3-5 minutes. How iodine kills these microorganisms and viruses is not exactly understood, but it rapidly penetrates cell walls, stops or interferes with protein syntheses and reacts with cell membranes and membrane bound structures.
Iodine has been used as an antimicrobial for the last century. Much has been written about molecular iodine yet many women suffering from Fibrocystic Breast Disease (FBD) are unaware that studies being conducted may soon yield an effective nonhormonal treatment. While there are several breast cancer drugs on the market, all available hormonal therapies have significant adverse events. In contrast, IoGen (I2) is a nonhormonal treatment that allows for safe long-term use with little or no side effects.
The main advantage of radioactive Iodine treatment for hyperthyroidism is that it tends to have a much higher success rate than medications. Depending on the dose of radioactive iodine chosen, and the disease under treatment (Grave's versus toxic goitre, versus hot nodule etc), success rate in achieving definitive resolution of the hyperthyroidism may vary from 75-100%.
