The International Olympic Committee is an organization based in Lausanne, Switzerland, created by Pierre de Coubertin and Demetrios Vikelas on June 23 1894 to reinstate the Ancient Olympic Games held in Greece between 776 BC to 396 AD. Its membership is 203 National Olympic Committees.

The International Olympic Committee selected Vancouver as the Host City of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games at its session in Prague on July 2, 2003. The 2010 Olympic Winter Games will be staged in Vancouver and Whistler from February 12 to 28, 2010. Whistler will host the Paralympic Winter Games from March 12 to 21, 2010. The Nominating Entities of the Vancouver 2010 Organizing Committee (VANOC) are the Government of Canada, the Province of British Columbia, the City of Vancouver, the Resort Municipality of Whistler, Canadian Olympic Committee, Canadian Paralympic Committee and the Lil'wat and Squamish First Nations.

At that time the regulations of the International Olympic Committee provided that its President must be chosen from the country where the next Games were to be held. As a result, Mr. Vikelas was elected to that office. No one worked harder or with more perseverance than he to persuade his fellow countrymen and the Greek government that they should support this ambitious project. His efforts were finally crowned by success.

The International Olympic Committee made a brave decision in 2001. It probably led to the greatest transformation of any host city that has held the Games to date, and it was almost certainly the most controversial. But when Zhang Yimou signals the curtain to rise on that special August date, he is likely to be signaling the start of one of the most spectacular.

By Emeli Dean In July 2001 the International Olympic Committee (ICO) chose Beijing as the equalizer of the Olympic Games 2008. In total there were ten cities applying: Bangkok, Havana, Cairo, Kuala Lumpur, Seville, Osaka, Toronto, Paris, Istanbul and Beijing.

The ad has angered Olympic officials because they feel it hijacks the Olympic brand -- a registered trademark -- even though it does not display the Games logo."
