Intercourse

By 1880, Intercourse had 54 homes and a population of 280, and transportation continued to play an important part in town history. The local stagecoach service apparently started around 1898. It was "a single horse conveyance similar to a market wagon, with a roll-up curtain and double set of seats." The stagecoach brought items from Lancaster City for local Intercourse businesses, and even picked up milk, butter, and eggs for delivery to Lancaster restaurants and industries, including an ice cream plant. One history of Intercourse notes that when it snowed, a bobsled was used instead. "When the driver knew of passengers beforehand, their comfort was added to by many a hot brick heated the night before in the oven, and wrapped in newspaper to preserve its warmth."

Intercourse pain can be totally debilitating. Complaints range from pain at initial penetration, to pain at deep penetration, to a combination of the two. While physicians can give varying primary or accompanying diagnoses, there is little doubt that the pain is of "mechanical" cause. In fact, the pain generally comes from adhesions or scar tissue left by a prior surgery, inflammation or trauma. In some cases, this is accompanied by an anteverted (forward tilting) tailbone.

Intercourse, or any sexual activity for that matter, may not be an appropriate activity for a couple if one partner does not enjoy it physically and/or emotionally and the other is uncomfortable knowing this. Men and women are usually very uncomfortable using or being used as a masturbation aid, at least when it occurs regularly or all the time. Even so, social and partner expectations may cause persons who do not enjoy certain sexual activities to withhold this fact from their partner, trying to live up to those false expectations. What they do not realize is, they are presuming their partner enjoys the activity, which certainly may not be the case. Couples end up going through the motions of sex even though neither partner finds what they are doing enjoyable, resulting in both losing interest. In addition, sex cannot be fulfilling if you cannot be honest with and accepting of your partner, unless of course you are totally self centered.

A final idea comes from the "old english" language used more commonly when the name "Intercourse" was adopted in 1814. It speaks to the "fellowship" or social interaction and friendship which was so much a part of an agricultural village and culture at this time. These roots mark the community of faith to this day, and the many evidences of it are experienced by those who care to dig a bit more deeply in their Amish farmland venture.

Intercourse has traditionally been viewed as the natural endpoint of all sexual contact between a man and a woman. However, the meaning of the term has been broadened in recent years to include a wider range of behaviors and a wider set of motivations and intentions.

Perhaps the biggest date in Intercourse town history was November Election Day, 1892. Folks arrived at the Cross Keys Tavern, still the social center of town and the place to cast ballots. The exciting political events were soon overshadowed by a cry of "Fire!" A barn fire, possibly started by children playing with matches, soon went out of control. Bells rang and volunteers with buckets came running, but the wind blew sparks to other buildings and the fire spread. Barns, warehouses, homes, and the town store were soon in flames. One story claims that the store's watchdog refused to leave it post and died in the fire.
