Inspra is an improved version of spironolactone, which is available as a cheap generic. Both Inspra and spironolactone block aldosterone, a hormone released by the adrenal glands to regulate blood pressure. They are often used alongside angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, such as Accupril, Zestril and Prinivil. Hyperkalemia, an excess of potassium in the body, can occur when the two types of drugs are combined.

These blocking agents inhibit the action of aldosterone, a substance produced within the body, which controls your blood pressure and heart function. High levels of aldosterone can cause changes in your body that lead to heart failure.
