Inspector Gadget 2 A live-action Inspector Gadget is back, this time with higher tech gadgets and more special effects. French Stewart (TV's Third Rock from the Sun) replaces Matthew Broderick as the bumbling detective in a plot that revolves around the glitch-ridden Gadget's replacement by a completely robotized female. Parent Trap's Elaine Hendrix does what little she can with the one-dimensional role of "G2." Still, Gadget falls for his rival and the pair team up with his smart-as-a-whip niece Penny and her brainy beagle for a showdown with Claw. Where Broderick struggled to humanize the caricature of an inept detective in the 1999 original, Stewart doesn't even try. Instead he plays Gadget as a cartoon, with endless mugging and over-the-top theatrics.

Inspector Gadget (1999) CAP Thermometers Yes, *Inspector Gadget* could have very easily been a G-rated movie WITHOUT losing any of its punch. Lots of neat gadgetry true to the cartoon series which spawned this flick. Matthew Broderic was perfect for the part. And lots of slapstick comedy. And now for the "But..."

Don Adams, the voice of Inspector Gadget in the American version of the cartoon, had ... played Maxwell Smart, the lead character in Get Smart, giving both shows a certain resemblance to North American viewers. When recording moved to the U.S. for the second season, several of the voices (among them Cree Summer, who played Penny) were replaced.

In the pilot episode of Inspector Gadget, Gadget had a moustache just like Clouseau from The Pink Panther. It was removed afterwards apparently because he was too similar to Clouseau. The episode was even revoiced so Gadget could claim the moustache was simply part of a disguise.
Inspector Gadget - Bumbling police officer equipped with bionic parts on the half-hour animated series INSPECTOR GADGET/SYN/1982-85. Inspector Gadget's character was reminiscent of Inspector Clouseau from the Pink Panther films starring Peter Sellers and the inept spy Maxwell Smart on the espionage comedy GET SMART/NBC/1965-69. Originally, a simple policeman, Gadget (voice of Don Adams) got upgraded with bionic extras and began working for Interpol. Wearing trenchcoat, hat and gloves, the new and improved Inspector Gadget battled such nefarious criminals as Dr. Claw and Madcat. Whenever the Inspector got into a fix, he always had just the right equipment to get him out of his troubles. If he fell from a building, a propeller popped from his hat to carry him to safety and when a bad guys took flight, Gadget sprouted long springy legs to run them down.
