Maria von Rosen was born in 1959, the same year Bergman divorced Grut and married Laretei. Ingmar Bergman did not tell Maria he was her father until she was 22, he writes in the biography. When he married Ingrid von Rosen in 1971, he had been married four times, and had eight other children, including a daughter with Liv Ullmann. Before publishing the book in 2004, he never publicly revealed that he was Maria's father.

Like many breast cancer patients at the time, Bergman concealed her illness, telling few people. According to Musa Mayer, who runs AdvancedBC.org, an online resource for women with advanced breast cancer: “They hid the fact that they had breast cancer because it was seen as a shameful thing. They became objects of pity.”
