Since Infoseek has been on the anti spamming campaign they have tried to institute new algorithms, (the way a spider ranks your page), that will detect the repetitive use of key words or phrases. The problem happened when they instituted a policy that was too rigid. Not only the spammers where caught, but a lot of innocent sites where ... penalized because of inadvertent overuse of words or phrases. They have not only penalized these sites but they have banned them entirely from their index. What has really happened is the content delivered to the searching public has decreased in its relevancy to the point most people have a hard time finding anything of use in their database.

Netscape and Infoseek have renegotiated their agreement over the extent to which the portal's search engine is promoted in Netscape's own Internet access point, Netcenter. Netcenter allows users to search the Web using a variety of the leading search engines and Net directories, including Infoseek, Lycos, Excite and Alta Vista. If users don't specify a particular engine, Netcenter selects one at random. Netscape informed Infoseek earlier this month that it wished to renegotiate that arrangement. The new deal will see Infoseek's chance of being selected drop from 15 per cent to just five. It will ... pay around 20 per cent more for each vistor who comes to its site from Netscape's.

In a complex swap of stock and services, Disney will acquire 25.8 million shares of Infoseek stock, or a 43 percent stake.
