Inflammation is the process by which the body heals soft tissue injuries, including injuries to connective tissues, ligaments, and tendons. This healing process goes through characteristic phases: inflammatory, proliferative, and remodeling. The goal of this inflammatory-reparative cascade is to regenerate the collagen and extracellular matrix (Proteoglycans) that give the connective tissues their strength and characteristic ability to handle great strain forces. Inflammation is basically a protective mechanism. The leakage of water and protein into the injured area brings humoral factors, including antibodies, into the locale and may serve to dilute soluble toxic substances and wash them away. The adherence and migration of leukocytes brings them to the local site to deal with infectious agents.
