Infections: Treatments

Infections of the spinal column are not common, but they are important because they are difficult to diagnose and there are serious consequences in the delay of an accurate diagnosis. In spite of extensive studies, confusion still surrounds the classification of spinal infections, their diagnosis and treatment. Because a microbiologic diagnosis is not sought in every case, diagnosis is often presumptive. Spinal infections are widely divided into two categories, vertebral osteomyelitis and disc space infections. Disc space infections are particularly controversial because it can be argued that except in children, discs don't have their own blood supply, and therefore, most infections involving disc space are secondary to a primary vertebral body infection. Following are some common infections and inflammatory disorders of the spine.

"I was very pleased to read this report about the decline in acute hepatitis infections," said Dr. James Boyer, Chair of the Board of the American Liver Foundation and Director of the Liver Center at the Yale University Medical School. "But this good news must not let us forget the millions of Americans suffering with chronic hepatitis. Without diagnosis and treatment these people are in serious risk of developing cirrhosis and liver cancer. Much more work needs to be done to combat hepatitis in this country."

It is important that fungal nail infections are diagnosed properly because treatment is long-term and expensive. Fungal nail infections are diagnosed by taking a sample of the debris under the nail. The most fungal elements are found under the nail and closest to the skin, therefore the nail should be trimmed before a sample is taken. There are two tests used to diagnose a fungal nail infection - the KOH test and a fungal culture. The KOH test has the advantage that it can be quickly performed. A fungal culture takes 3 to 4 weeks to come back, but can identify the exact fungal organism if there is any question.

The immune system is ... modulated and buffered by immune system bolstering substances such as many complex polysaccharides found in astragalus and maitake mushroom, this special ability can be put to great effect when dealing with infections. Laboratory research shows that pau d'arco is a fungicidal and can be used in the treatment and prevention of all types of infections caused by fungus or fungal derivatives. The anti-bactericidal properties of the sandalwood tree can be utilized, and its essential oil can be used as a lotion for topical application.

Unfortunately, many times infections do not cause any symptoms. STDs in particular are known for not producing any signs or symptoms. As a result, getting treatment for the infection may be delayed or never occur causing permanent damage to the reproductive organs. If your sperm production or reproductive tracts have been extensively damaged, it may be necessary to use surgical sperm retrieval methods in combination with ICSI and IVF. Alternately, you may decide to use a sperm donor in combination with IUI.

People with cutaneous infections are usually instructed to keep the affected areas as dry as possible until the infection has cleared. Doing so may mean changing out of a wet bathing suit or out of damp workout clothes as soon as possible. Antifungal shampoos are available, as well as antifungal mouth rinses. Infection does not always respond quickly to these treatments and may recur when topical application is discontinued.
