Indomethacin: Pain
built 618 days ago
Indomethacin is a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID) of the indole and indene acetic acid chemical class. It possesses analgesic and antipyretic effects used primarily in the treatment of rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. It ... has been used in other conditions including juvenile arthritis, Reiter's syndrome, Paget's disease, pseudogout, pleuritic chest pain, and pericarditis.
Indomethacin is a potent drug with many serious side effects and should not be considered an analgesic for minor aches and pains or fever. The drug is more potent than aspirin, but is not a better analgesic. In mild to moderate pain a standard oral dose of indomethacin proved as effective as 600mg aspirin.
Indomethacin blocks the synthesis of prostaglandins. This prevents pain receptors from passing the pain message to the brain so that pain perception is decreased. This drug reduces inflammation. It ... reduces fever by helping the body to dilate blood vessels so that heat is lost from the body. It is helpful in reducing fevers, but because the drug has serious side effects it is not commonly used for this purpose.

Indomethacin is a nonselective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase (COX) 1 and 2, enzymes that participate in prostaglandin synthesis from arachidonic acid. Prostaglandins are hormone-like molecules normally found in the body, where they have a wide variety of effects, some of which lead to pain, fever, and inflammation.
