At the center of Indianapolis is Monument Circle, a traffic circle at the intersection of Meridian and Market Streets, featuring the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument. (Monument Circle is depicted on the city’s flag, and is generally considered the city’s symbol). Monument Circle is in the shadow of Indiana's tallest skyscraper, the Chase Tower. Up until the early 1960s, Indianapolis zoning laws stated that no building could be taller than the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. Each Christmas season, local electricians string lights onto the monument. It is lit for the holiday season in a ceremony known as the "Circle of Lights," which attracts tens of thousands of Hoosiers to downtown Indianapolis on the day after Thanksgiving.

An Indianapolis museum that briefly showcased superhero memorabilia and a replica Batmobile has closed. The American Super Heroes Museum was the brainchild of local collector Dane Nash, who owns one of the nation's largest superhero collections. His treasures include costumes worn by every actor who has ever played Superman on TV or in the movies, along with posters and signed memorabilia. His museum, which opened in March 2007... featured replicas of the 1989 Michael Keaton Batmobile and the 1986 Adam West Batboat. The museum's off-the-beaten-path location near Union Station likely played a role in its demise.

Indianapolis has a humid continental climate (Koppen climate classification Dfa). Like most cities in the Midwest, it has four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and humid, with average high temperatures approaching 90 °F (32 °C), with days approaching or exceeding 100 °F (38 °C) not unheard of. Spring and autumn are usually pleasant, with temperatures reaching around 65 °F (18 °C). Spring... is much less predictable than autumn; midday temperature drops exceeding 30 °F (17 °C) are common during March and April, and instances of very warm days (86 °F; 30 °C) followed within 36 hours by snowfall are not unheard of during these months. Winters are cool to cold, with daily highs barely inching above freezing.

The city is a commercial manufacturing, transportation and cultural center situated in the productive Corn Belt on White River in the center of Indiana. that can be bragged about. During the nineteenth century when railroads were at their peek, Indianapolis was considered the crossroads of America. The twentieth century proved to be a wake-up and development period. The twenty-first century is witness to the city of Indianapolis being transformed into a cosmopolitan metroplex catering to the convention/tourist trade.

Indianapolis ranked as the twelfth largest city in the United States in 2000. The Indiana legislature selected the area as the state's capital in 1821 due to its central location, but the city remained a small and commercially insignificant town until the 1840s because of its inaccessibility. In 1847, railroads linked the city to national markets, attracting businesses and residents. From that time through the 1970s, Indianapolis served as a manufacturing and agribusiness hub for the Midwest. The "Rust Belt" phenomenon, and particularly the recession of 1979–1982, effected changes in the national economy that forced many of the city's largest employers to eventually close or move elsewhere, resulting in a blighted and depressed inner city. Revitalization efforts focusing on sports and attracting high technology and science-related industry slowly reversed the blight and transformed the city into a model for urban renewal.
