Inderal
built 655 days ago
Inderal was the first of its class to become widely available commercially, and the scientist involved in its discovery (Sir James Black) won the Nobel prize for medicine, partly for this work. Originally developed for the treatment of abnormally rapid heart rhythms (arrhythmias), early in its clinical development it was observed that the drug lowered raised blood pressure (hypertension). By reducing heart rate and the force of heart muscle contraction, Inderal reduces heart muscle oxygen demand. Because angina (chest pain caused by too little oxygen reaching the heart muscle) occurs when the oxygen demand by the heart exceeds the oxygen supply, Inderal is helpful in treating angina. Inderal is ... used to provide long term protection of the heart after a heart attack has been suffered and to manage patients with some forms of heart disease (cardiomyopathy).
The usual starting dose of Inderal is 40 milligrams 2 times a day. This dose may be in combination with a diuretic. Dosages are gradually increased to between 120 milligrams and 240 milligrams per day for maintenance. In some cases, a dose of 640 milligrams per day may be needed. Depending on the individual, maximum effect of this drug may not be reached for a few days or even several weeks. Some people may do better taking this medication 3 times a day.

Express Scripts Member? PROPRANOLOL (Inderal®) belongs to a group of medicines called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers reduce the workload on the heart and help it to beat more regularly. Propranolol controls, but does not cure, high blood pressure (hypertension). High blood pressure may not make you feel sick, but it can lead to serious heart problems. Propranolol has a number of other uses; for some of these the sustained-release capsules are not suitable. Propranolol steadies irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias) and relieves chest pain (angina), and it may be helpful after a heart attack.

Diabetes patients - Inderal may hide signs of low blood sugar, such as a rapid heartbeat. Be sure to watch for other signs of low blood sugar. Low blood sugar may make you anxious, sweaty, weak, dizzy, drowsy, or faint. It may ... make your vision change; give you a headache, chills, or tremors; or make you more hungry. Check blood sugar levels closely. Ask your doctor before you change the dose of your diabetes medicine.
