With some ticket prices as low as $29 one-way, Independence forced major airlines such as United, Delta and US Airways to trim their airfares. However, losses incurred from these cut-rate fares, combined with skyrocketing fuel costs, contributed to the company’s economic demise. In the wake of Independence’s collapse, its competitors are expected to raise fares significantly.

Sorry to say, it looks like the end for Independence Air, but it will mean better days ahead for United, JetBlue, Southwest, and AirTran as they are able to regain some pricing power from an airline which had incompetent management. Those other four carriers won't be leaving the D.C. area market anytime soon, and they will all see better days ahead. To those at Independence, best of luck, because there are airlines expanding in the D.C. area, and they need you.

Should Independence shut down, the biggest beneficiary is likely to be United Airlines, which Baker expects would pick up "nearly all" of the carrier's nonstop revenue, estimated at $200 million annually. It would pick up another $50 million of connecting revenue, leaving $150 million to be shared by 11 carriers, with Delta taking the most at $37 million, followed by American at $27 million and Continental at $19.2 million.
