Incubus: Women
built 606 days ago
Actually, the name "Incubus" was a freak thing. They had about an hour left before their first show, and didn't have a name. They picked up a thesaurus and found "incubus." The main definition is a demon who rapes women while they sleep, but the definition in their thesaurus was "a nightmare."

Essentially, the incubus is a lewd demon which seeks sexual intercourse with women. It is ... termed follet (French), alp (German), duende (Spanish) and folletto (Italian). The corresponding demon who appears to men is the succubus. When associated with one particular witch or sorcerer, both incubus and succubus are known as magistellus, or "familiar". Inasmuch as the nightmare dream is sexual in latent content, incubus is often used interchangeably with The Mare Demon; in fact, the Latin word for nightmare is incubo (to lie upon). The incubus can assume either a male or a female shape.

In medieval European folklore, the incubus is a male demon (or evil spirit) who visits women in their sleep to lie with them in ghostly sexual intercourse. The woman who falls victim to an incubus will not awaken, although may experience it in a dream. Should she get pregnant the child will grow inside her as any normal child, except that it will possess supernatural capabilities. Usually the child grows into a person of evil intent or a powerful wizard. Legend has it that the magician Merlin was the result of the union of an incubus and a nun. A succubus is the female variety, and she concentrates herself on men.

In the Middle Ages, people in Europe believed that Incubi (One Incubus, several Incubi) were male demons. They lay on sleeping people, to have sexual intercourse with them. According to legend, they mostly did that to women. They would ... do this to make other incubi. While they had sex with their victim, they drained its energy. They did this to sustain themselves.

A number of mundane explanations have been offered for the origin of the incubus legends. They involve the Medieval preoccupation with sin, especially sexual sins of women. Victims may have been experiencing waking dreams or sleep paralysis. Also, nocturnal arousal, orgasm or nocturnal emission could be explained by the idea of creatures causing an otherwise guilt-producing and self-conscious behavior.[4]

According to the church fathers, the incubus was an angel who fell from grace because of his insatiable lust for women. As a demon, the incubus continued with his carnal desires, preying upon vulnerable women, raping them in their sleep and inciting sexual desires that only himself could satisfy.
