Incest: Children
built 198 days ago
Incest is sexual intercourse that takes place between individuals related by blood. The act may be committed by a father with his daughter, between a grandparent and a grandchild and between a brother and a sister. Though children of the same sex as the perpetrator may ... be victims of molestation, it is not termed as incest because penetration does not take place.

Incest is described as sexual activity between family members who are legally and customarily forbidden to marry. This includes blood relatives such as brothers and sisters, parents and children, grandparents and grandchildren, or aunts or uncles with nephews or nieces.

Incest can happen in any family and can happen one time or be an on-going problem. People who were themselves victims of physical and sexual abuse may not know any other way to relate to their children. Boundaries are crossed and sacred trusts are broken. Sometimes there is confusion in family roles and if the parent is absent, either physically or emotionally, the child is forced into that role. Sometimes an adult will rationalize what they are doing is a “service” to the child to teach them about sex and prepare them for adulthood.

Incest at its most immoral (according to western moral standards) is most frequently engaged in by parents of both sexes with their children. This is where incest can cross the line between consensual prohibited sex, and abusive pedophilia. A study by Floyd Martinson found that 10-15% of college students have had a childhood sexual experience with a brother or sister.

Incest is different from child sexual abuse, since the latter consists of any "sexual" act with the child. This does not necessarily include penetration. Child abuse may include fondling, exhibitionism, masturbation, sexual intercourse or showing of explicitly sexual material. Child pornography (involving children in the production of pornographic material) is ... a form of child sexual abuse.

Incest has been cited as the most common form of child abuse. Studies conclude that 43 percent (43%) of the children who are abused are abused by family members, 33 percent (33%) are abused by someone they know, and the remaining 24 percent (24%) are sexually abused by strangers (Hayes, 1990). Other research indicates that over 10 million Americans have been victims of incest.
