Incas: Roads
built 178 days ago
The Incas ... built many large buildings with stones that were so precisely cut that they did not require mortar. Because of their building prowess, many of their buildings are still standing today. They also used their stone-cutting skills to build roads complete with tunnels and bridges throughout the Andes, and they built aqueducts to bring water to their cities.

Not content merely to build such a fabulous highway, the Incas went so far as to landscape Capac-nan. On either side of the road, stone walls were placed at regular intervals packed on top with earth in which agave cacti were planted. At intervals of twelve miles they built shelters called "tampus" where weary travelers could rest or spend the night.

The Incas rule over massively varied terrain, made up of large areas of jungle, desert and rugged highlands. Their roads are in effect paths, kept clear in these difficult conditions. Suspension bridges span small ravines, enabling runners to hurry unimpeded with a message - or caravans of llamas to make slower but steady progress with bales of raw materials and precious fabrics.
