1930 lynching of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith in Marion, IN This book, Without Sanctuary: Lynching photography in America (by James Allen, Hilton Als, Leon F. Litwack, with a forward by Congressman John Lewis; Twin Palms Publishers, 2000), is a new, startling book on this shocking topic of lynching in America. This book is an extension of the exhibit held at the Roth Horowitz Gallery and the collected photo postcards of Mr. James Allen of Atlanta, Georgia. Pages of actual real life lynchings are captured with photos and dates with explanatory texts about where these dastardly acts occurred. Mr. Allen says, "Without Sanctuary is a grim reminder that a part of the American past we would prefer for various reasons to forget we need very much to remember." The book is a vivid account of the existence of lynching on American soil. On view in the book are ninety-eight plates of lynchings and the victims and the people surrounding the actual executions. A few were white; a few were women; but most were African-American men used as prime targets for lynch mobs.

In America owning stocks is a luxury that only the very few can afford. For many middle class Americans their concern today is not about being able to invest their savings, but the fear of losing a pension and their retirement security. Today only half of working Americans are covered by any pension benefit at all. These Americans are completely dependent on Social Security when they retire. The other half is covered by pensions or 401K investment plans. Twice as many people are covered by 401Ks compared with private pensions.

The Circus in America: 1793-1940 surveys the history of the American circus over a 150-year period. It promotes serious scholarly research of the significant role the circus played in the growth of American society and popular culture. Historians trace the origins of the modern circus to late eighteenth century England, but the circus reached its height as a popular art form in nineteenth and twentieth century America. But to date there is no authoritative study, integrated with digital resources, that addresses this uniquely American cultural institution.Project director Lavahn Hoh and the Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities are proud to present this digital research collection, which has a critical collection of archival, library, and museum resources, as well as essays, maps, timelines, images, and videos that help contextualize and interpret these materials.
America's poor compare favorably with the general population of other nations in square footage of living space. The average poor American has more square footage of living space than does the average person living in London, Paris, Vienna, and Munich. Poor Americans have nearly three times the living space of average urban citizens in middle-income countries such as Mexico and Turkey. Poor American households have seven times more housing space per person than the general urban population of very-low-income countries such as India and China. (See Appendix Table A for more detailed information.)
