Impeachment originated in England, where the House of Commons would present articles of impeachment to the House of Lords, which then tried the case. A well-known instance was the impeachment and trial (1786–95) of Warren Hastings, first governor general of India.

Once a person has been impeached by the House, the Articles of Impeachment are presented to the Senate. "The Senate shall have the sole power to try all impeachments."[7] If the President is being impeached, then the Senate trial is presided over by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. At the conclusion of the trial a two-thirds majority is required to convict a person so impeached.

Should any one of the Articles of Impeachment be approved by a simple majority vote, the President will be "impeached." However, being impeached is sort of like being indicted of a crime. There still has to be a trial, which is where the US Senate comes in.

Before the House Judiciary Committee can put together the Articles of Impeachment, someone must initiate the impeachment procedure. Most often, this occurs when members of the House pass a resolution. Another method outlined in the manual... is for individual citizens to submit a memorial for impeachment.
