The subject of much recent debate in Washington and across the country, immigration reform could push up wages if it makes it harder for U.S. businesses to hire lower-wage workers for low-skilled jobs. That would raise costs for farmers and other producers, who could then try to pass the costs along to consumers.

Emmy Award-winning journalist and former CNN Washington Bureau Chief, Frank Sesno, moderated the panel discussion regarding immigration reform. Fote called for timely reform that reflects America's democratic values and recognizes the interdependence of the U.S. and foreign economies and societies.
Any immigration reform worthy of the name must reflet the underlying reality that the American economy continues to create hundreds of thousands of new jobs each yer for low-skilled workers. Those jobs are being created in retail sales, food preparation, cleaning and janitorial services, for retails salespersons, agriculture, construction and landscaping.

Any "immigration reform" must include certain and effective prosection of illegal aliens. As a recent story in the Arizona Daily Star reported, "For all the tough talk out of Washington on immigration, illegal entrants caught along the Mexican border have almost no reason to fear they will be prosecuted. Ninety-eight percent of those arrested between Oct. 1, 2000, and Sept. 30, 2005, were never prosecuted, according to an Associated Press analysis of federal data.
