Safety, tolerance, and pharmacokinetics of subcutaneous Imitrex were first evaluated in U.S. clinical trials in 1988. An ascending-dose design was employed utilizing a placebo control with each dose level of Imitrex (1, 2, 3, or 4 mg) (4). No serious adverse events were demonstrated in healthy male volunteers receiving up to the maximum dose (4 mg). The study protocol was therefore amended and doses up to 16mg SC were administered without serious adverse events. It was noted that the incidence of adverse events tended to increase with increasing dose.

Imitrex may initially cause flushing, dizziness, weakness, nausea, drowsiness, stiffness, or feelings of tingling, heat, fatigue. If any of these effects from Imitrex continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to Imitrex, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an Imitrex allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects from Imitrex not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Diabetes patients -- Imitrex may affect your blood sugar level. Your doctor may need to change the dose of diabetes medicine you are taking. Do not take Imitrex if you are currently taking or have taken an MAO inhibitor within the last 2 weeks. If you are uncertain whether your other medications contain an MAO inhibitor, check with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Imitrex.
