In one study, 52 to 62 percent of people with migraines had no (or mild) pain within two hours of taking Imitrex tablets, compared to only 27 percent who did not take Imitrex. Within four hours, as many as 79 percent of people who had taken Imitrex had migraine relief, compared to just 38 percent of people not taking Imitrex. Similar results were seen in studies of Imitrex Nasal Spray and Imitrex Injection.

Ekbom et al () reported on a 32-year-old man who received a total of 480 injections of 6 mg SC Imitrex for the treatment of acute attacks of chronic cluster headache over an eleven month period. There was no evidence of tolerance and no serious adverse events. Resolution of attacks were within 10 minutes (for 90% of the attacks treated with Imitrex) if treated with Imitrex compared with 56 minutes for untreated attacks.

In two clinical trials held within the United States, more than 1,000 patients with acute migraine headaches were given a 6-milligram injection of Imitrex. Imitrex relieved the pain in 75 percent of the patients within one hour. Some even felt pain relief within 10 to 30 minutes, and 80 percent of the patients felt pain relief after two hours.

Many triptan users are already familiar with the Imitrex (sumatriptan) StatDose delivery system. It's an auto-injector system that utilizes a short, subcutaneous needle. These injections work more quickly than other forms of triptans, but many triptan users shy away from them because they don't like needles.
