Imitrex: Imitrex Injection
built 622 days ago
Imitrex is a prescription drug used for the treatment of migraine headaches once they start. The drug does not help prevent migraines. A migraine occurs when some of the blood vessels in the head become dilated. Imitrex works by narrowing these blood vessels, helping return them to their normal state. Tingling, dizziness, and chest discomfort are a few common Imitrex side effects. Imitrex -- which comes in a tablet form, a nasal spray, and an injection -- should be taken only during a migraine, not on a regular basis.
The recommended adult dose of Imitrex is 6 mg injected subcutaneously (SC). A second 6 mg injection may be administered after 1 hour if symptoms of migraine return. The maximum recommended dose in 24 hours is two 6 mg injections separated by at least 1 hour.

Imitrex injection is administered just below the skin with an autoinjector (self-injection device). Choose a site where the skin is thick enough to take the full length of the needle (1/4 inch). Avoid injecting Imitrex into a muscle or a vein. Your doctor should instruct you on how to use the autoinjector and how to dispose of the empty syringes. You should ... read the instruction pamphlet that comes with the medication.
Imitrex was well tolerated by patients during dose-ranging clinical trials. The majority of adverse events were mild and transient and appeared to be dose related (1-3). The most common adverse events reported in controlled clinical trials during dose-ranging evaluation were injection site reactions, tingling, warmth, burning, and heaviness in the head, neck and extremities. Most of the adverse events were reported to have disappeared within 30 minutes following dosage administration.
