Unique to the illustration field is the fact that a graduating student is thrust into the market place and forced to compete with established illustrators. The mission of the Academy is to shorten the gap that exists between the student and the working professional. This problem is resolved using a rigorous hands-on approach implemented by the faculty. The students work through each assignment with a logical step-by-step approach to produce finished illustrations. Driven by real-world examples and deadlines, the students are encouraged to focus on concepts, techniques, and to pursue a personal point of view to make their work unique. Along side the technical demonstrations of media and life drawing skills, the Academy focuses on the functional business practices in the field of illustration.
The second term introduces students to color techniques and theory as they apply their skills to substantial illustration projects in both traditional and digital media. Students are encouraged to progress from merely pictorial to more descriptive, conceptual illustration projects. The third term allows students to study specific subject matter in greater depth through botanical, zoological, advanced Graphics courses, and collaborations with science writers. In addition, students explore museum exhibition skills as they produce the spring illustration exhibit.
Created for ages seven through eleven, the set combines extensive color photography and illustration with high-quality writing to produce an effective and enjoyable learning experience. It's distinguished from previous children's reference sets, says Britannica, by the quality of the articles and its broad, international scope. Subjects covered include science, religion and folklore, geography, history, people and other topics popular with students in this age group.

Today, many illustration students are made aware of the technology available, with equal emphasis placed upon more traditional illustration techniques. As a result, traditional and digital techniques are often used in conjunction with each other.
Students specialize in a single area of illustration for the entire term. They may choose illustration projects in editorial, advertising, book, or institutional areas, in order to explore artwork in a related series of instructor-directed themes.
