The bachelor's degree program in Illustration produces graduates who develop and produce images for visual communications. Students apply skills from communication design and the fine arts and develop the creative vision necessary for professional success. Additionally, Students integrate communications goals and visual messages as part of a creative team. The program's curriculum provides a foundation in drawing, painting, and illustration techniques for both traditional and emerging media, as well as a working knowledge of graphic design production. The Illustration program prepares its students for entry-level positions such as production assistant, layout specialist, prepress assistant, and production artist. The length of the program is twelve (12), eleven (11) week quarters.

Illustration is introduced as a form of visual communication in which students use their artistic abilities to effectively convey ideas. The illustration program is rigorous in its demands, teaching technical expertise in diverse media as well as conceptual problem solving. The illustration student concentrates upon drawing, painting, and design. A high degree of facility in these skills must be achieved before moving on to the consideration of specific illustration problems, and it is encouraged throughout the program. The specialized courses deal with various aspects of the field: general illustration, editorial illustration, book illustration, typography, reproduction, graphics, perspective, with specialties in these categories such as the writing, designing, illustration, and production of children's books. Job opportunities in illustration are varied and substantial. Large greeting card firms, for example, employ illustrators in staff positions and maintain entry-level training programs for the inexperienced graduate with a major in illustration. Other staff positions exist in publishing houses creating books, magazines, and newspapers.

Medical illustration is a field of continual growth. Medical research is embedded in nearly every medical illustration assignment, sometimes requiring learning to use medical instrumentation, doing one's own cadaver dissections, organizing computer searches or studying relevant medical illustration articles. More formal continuing education is available through the Association of Medical Illustrators (AMI). Continuing education credits are offered for workshops presented at the AMI's annual meeting and at AMI-sponsored regional meetings throughout the United States. The AMI ... offers a certification program in which medical illustration artists can, through a series of examinations and coursework, demonstrate their proficiency in various aspects of the profession. The annual AMI medical illustration meeting also provides the opportunity for medical artists to display their work in the largest exhibit devoted to medical art in the world.
