Illegal Immigration: United States
built 658 days ago
This election season, candidates are walking the fine line between public anger over illegal immigration and the growing clout of the country's largest minority group. At the same time politicians are talking more about tougher border control and cracking down on immigration violations, they're ... ramping up efforts to connect with Hispanic voters. And they're doing so even in Iowa, where the Latino population remains tiny but is growing rapidly," the Wall Street Journal reports. "Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton recently launched a series of efforts to connect with Iowa's Spanish-speaking community. The Con Hillary Una Vida Mejor (A Better Life with Hillary) bilingual campaign has been flooding the state's Spanish radio airwaves this month."

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office said it did not learn of Carranza’s illegal immigration status until New Jersey officials informed the office last Thursday, according to the New York Times. An agency spokesman said that if ICE had been notified earlier, Carranza would have been detained.
In Virginia, local jail officials keep only about 25 percent of the money that federal immigration officials pay per bed for illegal immigrants waiting to be deported, with the rest going to the state. The panel called for that amount to be increased to 100 percent and to increase the amount the state provided to counties to build new facilities. This extra revenue would enable local jail officials to add jail beds for illegal immigrants and eliminate the need for a centralized facility.
"Those who study our national illegal immigration crisis watch with knowing sadness as millions of Americans outraged over our porous borders eventually get to the obvious question: Why has the president of the United States refused to secure American borders? Perhaps it is part of a larger plan. Without a vote in Congress, or consent of the American people, our intentionally unsecured borders and our government's deliberate lack of enforcement of our immigration and employment laws could be an essential step to a much larger goal: a 'North American Union,'" writes D.A. King. "The un-stated NAFTA-World Trade Organization-based theory is simple: Borders are geopolitical abstractions — barriers to increased profit — and have become obsolete in the global economy. At present, labor is overpriced in the United States.

Despite the dramatic increase in enforcement, the impact on the volume of illegal immigration is not clear. The number of illegal alien apprehensions has not declined. Also, research shows that the majority of illegal aliens deported to Mexico continue to attempt crossings until they succeed. Some observers have concluded that border enforcement has not deterred illegal immigration. Other research... shows that increased enforcement traps workers in Mexican border cities and prevents them from entering the United States. [1]

The negative impact on the federal budget need not be the only or even the primary consideration when deciding what to do about illegal immigration. But assuming that the fiscal status quo is unacceptable, there are three main changes in policy that might reduce or eliminate the fiscal costs of illegal immigration. One set of options is to allow illegal aliens to remain in the country, but attempt to reduce the costs they impose. A second set of options would be to grant them legal status as a way of increasing the taxes they pay. A third option would be to enforce the law and reduce the size of the illegal population and with it the costs of illegal immigration.
