It's no exaggeration to say that Ida Lupino was born to be in the entertainment business. Her father was a famous dance hall performer in England, and her mother was known as the fastest tap dancer alive. She began performing at 10, entered the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art at 13, and first appeared on film at 15.
As a film actress, Ida Lupino was known as the "Queen of the B's" and "the poor man's Bette Davis". But she was much more than that and she wanted creative control to shape her own film projects to prove it. This was at a time when only a couple of women had ever directed a motion picture and few women were taken seriously at all in the business.

Bogart and Lupino are at their best in this film. A strong supporting cast includes Arthur Kennedy, Alan Curtis, Henry Hull, Henry Travis, Jerome Cowan and Cornell Wilde. There is ... a small dog in the cast who will win your admiration and break your heart. Raoul Walsh is known for his direction of many other fine movies including ROARING TWENTIES and THE STRAWBERRY BLONDE.

[One] Lupino was a pupil of Joseph Grimaldi, and members of the Lupino family often played Clown in Harlequinade. In 1887 six members of the family appeared together in Newcastle, and in 1940 a further Five at the Theatre Royal, Nottingham in 1940.
