Hallgrímskirkja, Church of Hallgrímur, in Reykjavík, Iceland. Iceland has a left-right multi-party system. The biggest party is the right wing Independence Party (’’Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn’’), while the second largest one is the social democratic Alliance (‘’Samfylkingin’’). Following the May 2007 parliamentary elections, these two formed a coalition, enjoying a strong majority in Althing, with 43 out of 63 members supporting it.
Elections to the Althingi, Iceland's legislature, took place on May 8, 1999. The incumbent government, a coalition of the Independence and Progressive parties, was continued in office. The Independence Party, under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Davíd Oddsson, won 26 seats and the Progressive Party 12 in the 63-member legislature.
