[One] important way that Iceland uses its water is as a source of energy. Iceland makes efficient use of both its freshwater and geothermal water supplies to create a power supply that is cheap, clean, and renewable, making energy production one of Iceland's more useful resources, with almost all of its electricity and heating coming from hydroelectric power and geothermal water . Hot water from Iceland's taps does not require power to heat it, as it comes straight from geothermal sources. Iceland leads the way in the development of hydrogen technology, a pollution free form of energy. This technology works by translating the difference between hot and cold water temperatures, and the implementation of it in Iceland could mean the curbing of greenhouse gases and Iceland becoming a contributor in the non-polluting economies of the future. Being literally surrounded by water, a technology that could produce electricity from this abundant liquid would be of infinite value to Iceland.

About 70 percent of Iceland's energy needs, from home heating to electricity for aluminum smelters, are already met by geothermal or hydro-electric power. Only the transport sector is still hooked on polluting oil and gas.
