Ice Climbers: Climbing
built 443 days ago
Ice Climbing Ice Climbing is more difficult than sport climbing and requires certain skills and different equipment. Unfortunately the avalanche risks are too often underestimated by ice climbers. Over the past few years, avoidable deadly accidents happened because climbers unfamiliar with the area started ascents without having inquired locally about the weather and snow/ice conditions first. Therefore, ask local climbers, ask the staff at the Parks Canada Info Centres or ask the staff of local sport equipment stores, before you start climbing. Experienced ice climbing instructors and certified guides are available. Don't hesitate to contact Adventure Rockies to arrange for lessons or a guided climb, if you are new to the sport or want to discover new areas.
Ice climbers equip their boots with special crampons - metal devices with pointed cleats, two of which point forward and can be kicked into the ice to gain footholds. Ice axes - 8-inch serrated picks with fiberglass handles - are plunged into the ice to gain handholds. A cord, or "leash" is attached to the handle of the ice axe and wrapped around the climber's wrist.

Ice climbers use ice screws to secure their safety ropes to ice walls. Climbers experience a variety of different ice types in the field. often leading to unsafe conditions. Due to lack of trust in the protection, the word from the ice wall is “don’t fall!” The project objective was to develop a means of testing ice screw performance in various ice conditions in a controlled laboratory environment.
