Wheat yields on the Iberian peninsula are expected to be very high this year thanks to the abundant rainfall. Spain's expected 2.9 tons/hectare yield would match 1996/97's record yield, and Portugal's expected 1.88 yield would make it the fourth highest yield on record. The main wheat growing areas in central and northwest Spain got at least 100 percent of their normal rainfall for the 3 months from the start of April through June 30th, and much of these areas received 125 or 150 percent of their normal three month rainfall. All of Portugal got 150 to 200 percent of its normal rainfall from April to July.

The first Viking expedition to the Iberian peninsula was organised in AD 844, although it is believed that prior to that date the Vikings had already visited the place beforehand. That first Viking expedition must have been a serious matter, considering the destruction they left on their journey along the Atlantic. The [L]ordemani as they were called in those days by local historians- plundered many places in the regions of Asturias and Galicia before they sailed south to the territories of Muslim Spain, where they attacked Lisbon, Cadiz, Algeciras and the north of Africa.

At the beginning of the period 1000 to 1400, the Umayyad caliphate collapses, fragmenting Islamic power in the Iberian Peninsula. Christian kingdoms in the north gradually unite, become much more powerful, and expand their territories through a campaign of reconquista (reconquest). Despite the weakening of Islamic power, its influence in science, medicine, and art is extraordinary and contributes to the rich diversity of the peninsula as Christians, Muslims, and Jews live peacefully together. By the end of the period, the Christian kings conquer virtually all of Muslim al-Andalus, leaving Granada and the surrounding territory as the last bastion of Islamic Iberia.

Major commercial cherry orchards in Europe extend from the Iberian peninsula east to Asia Minor; they are ... grown to a smaller extent north to the British Isles and southern Scandinavia. In the United States, most sweet cherries are grown in the west. California and Washington supply mainly sweet cherries intended for fresh use. Major sweet cherry cultivars include the 'Bing', 'Brooks', 'Tulare', 'King', and 'Rainier'. Oregon and Michigan provide light-coloured 'Royal Ann' ('Napoleon') cherries for the maraschino cherry process. Most sour cherries are grown in four states bordering the Great Lakes, in Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Modern day Portugal and Spain make up the Iberian Peninsula. Iberia is surrounded by water except for its northern boundary where the Pyrenees divide Spain and France. To the east lays the Mediterranean Sea and to the west lays the Atlantic Ocean. The southernmost point of Spain is separated from northern Africa by the Strait of Gibraltar, which is about 64 kilometres long and varies in width from about thirteen to thirty-nine kilometres.
