Iberian Peninsula: Middle Ages
built 629 days ago
Still, in the Iron age the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians and Romans came to the Iberian peninsula. The first two did not bring enough horses in a way that could influence substantially existing the Iberian horse. However, Greeks have a legend where the horses from "Lusitânia", on the banks of river Tagus, have as father the wind. This is certainly a metaphoric and poetic way to express how fast the Iberian horse was considered in the antiquity (Monteiro, 1985). The Carthaginians and Romans brought, in particular, the Berber horse. This can be seen through the several statues and coins from these civilizations, which show a horse with convex head profile and high and round movements (Oom, 1992).
The other major language spoken by the Christian states of the Iberian Peninsula is Catalan. Catalan was first spoken in Catalonia, an amalgamation of various small marcher lordships founded by the Franks as buffer states against the Moors. The modern state of Andorra is the only one of these independent states to resist annexation by France or Spain. Catalan's closest linguistic relative is Provencal, the language of medieval southern France. Provencal and Catalan were mutually intelligible in the Middle Ages, and the Provencal poets who developed courtly love poetry found an avid audience among the Catalan aristocracy.

Abd al-Rahman II, emir of Muslim Spain The secong great Viking expedition to the Iberian peninsula was more successful and lasted three years, between AD 859 and 862. Some sixty-two longships under the command of Hastein and Bjorn "Ironsides" raided the coasts of Galicia, Portugal, Andalusia, and north Africa. This time, Seville was better prepared and the Vikings clashed in the Guadalquivir river with the fleet that Abd al-Rahman had built to be used against them.
